When you’re new to knitting, it’s best to keep projects simple until you’ve mastered the basic stitches, but that doesn’t meant you have to knit nothing but useless swatches. These easy garter stitch mitts are simply creatively seamed squares, and they’re the perfect first project for a new knitter. The bold color blocking keeps things fun without making the mitts more complex to knit, and when you’re done, you’ll have a cute new pair of mitts and enough experience to tackle a more challenging knitting pattern.

1. Cast On
Cast on 30 stitches using Color A.
2. First Stripe
Knit in garter stitch with Color A until your knitting measures 7.5 cm (3 in). Garter stitch is the name of the simplest stitch patterns in knitting. You knit all stitches on all rows without any purling.
3. Second Stripe
Switch to Color B and work in garter stitch until your piece measures 15 cm (6 in). You should have the same number of rows in Color B as you have in Color A.
4. Binding Off
Switch to Color A and knit one row.
Bind off all stitches using Color A.
Weave in all ends.
Seam the bind-off edge with the cast-on edge at the top and bottom, leaving a gap in the middle that’s large enough for your thumb to comfortably fit through.
