In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to make a wooden bottle opener using a scrollsaw or bandsaw and a few other basic tools. This is a simple yet very useful project for a beginner woodworker. If you're new to woodworking, make sure you read our woodworking fundamentals tutorial.
- Safety glasses
- Wood (approximately 7in long, 3in wide, and 3/4in thick. A harder wood like oak or maple is perfect for this project)
- Scroll saw or band saw
- Saw blades
- Hand drill or drill press
- Drill bits
- Sanding paper
- Wood glue
- One nail
- Mallet or hammer
- When working with power tools such as saws, it is very important to wear safety glasses at all times.
- Make sure you are fully concentrating on the task at hand as saws and other power tools can do a lot of damage very quickly!
- For this tutorial, we assume you will be using either a scroll saw or band saw. However, all photos included in this tutorial feature a scroll saw.
- We recommend using a drill press because holes made in a press tend to be more accurate that those made with a hand-held drill, but either method will work.
1. Draw the Design
Using a pencil, draw the outline of the bottle opener handle on the piece of wood you will be cutting.
2. Cut the Design
Line up the saw blade with the edge of the wood where your design begins. Cut along the outline of the bottle opener handle.
3. Sand the Wood
Once your piece is cut, use sand paper to finish and smooth all the edges of your project piece.
4. Mark and Drill
After sanding the bottle opener handle, the next step is to mark the place where you will drill a pilot hole for the nail. This hole will be centered along the thickness of the wood, but slightly offset to one side.
Using a drill bit that has a slightly smaller diameter than the nail you're using, drill a hole where you've made a mark on the wood. Make sure not to accidentally drill too far and go through the top portion of the opener.
5. Bend the Nail
Now it's time to bend the nail that will be the part that pulls the cap off the the bottle. Place the nail, head-down in a vise. The portion of the nail below the top of vise should be a bit longer that the distance between the hole you drilled and the edge of the top of the opener handle. This means that the nail head will over-hang the handle by approximately one eighth of an inch.
Once the nail is well secured in the vise, carefully tap the nail with a hammer to bend it into a 90 degree angle.
This is what the nail should look like once it has been correctly bent.
6. Add the Nail
Once the nail has been bent, the next step is to install it in the hole that was previously drilled. You can add a drop or two of wood glue to the hole before adding the nail for a bit of extra stability, but that is not imperative. Make sure to remove any extra glue once you have installed the nail. Carefully tap the nail into place with the hammer until the nail is flush with the top of the opener handle.
