Wreaths are the perfect holiday decoration. Festive and simple, they work in any room. This version uses leather to create a modern take on a traditional wreath. The best bit is that it can be used again and again every year. What’s not to love?
- Card stock
- Fabric scissors
- Pencil or pen
- Backing fabric
- Tailor’s chalk
- Leather sewing machine needles
- Sewing machine
- Hand needles
- Wire or wooden circle base (you could bend some wire or use an embroidery hoop), 6in (16cm) in diameter
1. Prepare Your Leaf Template
Start by creating your leaf template out of card stock. Sketch a leaf shape measuring 2in tall by 3/4in wide (5cm by 2cm). Cut out your template.
2. Prepare Your Leaves
Place your leaf template onto the wrong side of the leather.
Trace the shape onto the leather using tailor’s chalk or a pencil.
Cut out the leaf.
Repeat steps 1 to 3 until you have 36 individual leather leaves. You can use different shades of leather to create more richness of color and depth in your wreath. I used two tones of green with a textured gold for shine.
Repeat steps 1 to 3 using the backing fabric, until you have cut out 36 individual backing-fabric leaves.
3. Assemble the Leaves
Take one leather leaf and one backing-fabric leaf. Place them wrong sides together.
Pin in place.
Sew using leather needles and a straight stitch as close to the edge as possible.
Pinch the bottom edge of the leaves together. Use a hand needle to sew in place.
Repeat steps 1 to 4 for all the leaves.
4. Assemble the Wreath
Take two leaves. Overlap the bottom edges.
Using a hand needle, sew through both bottom ends of the leaves to hold them together.
Place a pair of leaves onto your wooden or metal circle.
Use a piece of thread to tie the pair of leaves onto the circle.
Take another pair of leaves. Overlap these leaves with the first set of leaves.
Repeat all the way around the circle until it is covered with leaves.
Hang Your Wreath
Once you’ve finished your wreath, all you need to do is work out where you want to hang it. Not only does this make a great decoration, but it would also make a great gift as well. Simple and stylish.
