What You'll Be Creating

If you know how to make loop headpins and eyepins, you've got one of the most fundamental skills in making statement jewellery covered. Follow this step-by-step tutorial and nail these basic skills.

Supplies

  • A range of beads
  • Headpins and eyepins
  • Metal chain
  • Jump rings
  • Lobster clasp
  • Extension chain
  • Cutters
  • Round nose pliers

1. Make Beads With a Loop at Each End

Step 1

For beads with loops at both ends, thread an eyepin (with a loop already made at one end) through the bead.

Step 2

Bend the wire 90 degrees to the side of the bead.

Step 3

Using wire cutters, trim the wire to around 1cm long.

Step 4

Turn the headpin into a loop using round nose pliers. Hold the pliers in your hand, fingers over the top and palm facing away. Twist your hand forward - like you're revving a motorbike but in the opposite direction. Watch the video below to see it in action.

Step 5

Keep threading and turning loops in the eyepins on all the beads you want to hang another bead from.

2. Make Beads With One Loop to Hang

To make a bead with just one loop, use a headpin (the one with the flat end) and follow the same steps as above to make a loop.

3. Put It All Together to Make a Necklace

Step 1

Lay out the beads in your necklace design.

Step 2

Attach the beads together using jump rings.

Step 3

Measure the chain around your neck and find the middle. Starting from the centre, attach the beaded droplets using jump rings.

Step 4

Using jump rings, attach an extension chain to one end of the chain and a lobster clasp to the other end.
