Of all the things you can crochet, why not hook up some cute little stuffed toys? Like this friendly little toilet paper softie filled with hugs, love, and polyfill? Grab some yarn, felt, your favorite hook (I prefer an H for projects like these), and let's get crafting! Look for the full crochet pattern write-up, sans commentary (and sewing), in the conclusion.

Supplies

TP-001
  • Brown or tan yarn (acrylic, light taupe shown)
  • White or cream yarn (acrylic)
  • White, brown, and pink acrylic felt
  • Various colors of sewing threads
  • Fabric scissors
  • Polyfill
  • Yarn needle
  • Embroidery needle
  • Light blue embroidery thread
  • Sewing pins
  • Size H crochet hook (5.00mm)
  • Stitch marker or a bobby pin

1. Start With the Roll

Step 1

Start with your brown yarn and chain six with an H hook. You can use another size, of course, but that will change your stitch gauge. The H hook makes approximately four chains per inch. Slip stitch in the sixth chain from the hook.

Step 2

Work on single crochet (sc) in each stitch around for six stitches total.

TP-004

Step 3

Use a stitch marker or a bobby pin and mark the start of the round. Work 2sc in each stitch around for a total of 12 stitches. This marks the end of your second round.

TP-005

Step 4

For the third round, *1sc in the next st., 2sc in the next st.* and repeat around for a total of 18 stitches. This ends your third round. Cut your yarn (leaving a three inch tail, and pull through to tie-off.

2. Change Colors and Continue the Round

Step 1

Grab your white yarn and make a loop on your hook. Join with a single crochet to one of the stitches in the last round of the brown circle (ideally where your stitch marker or bobby pin was). At this stage, you might like to watch our video tutorial on how to change colors.

TP-008

Step 2

Work an sc in the next stitch, and 2 sc in the stitch after. Pattern as follows for the rest of the round: *1sc in next two stitches, 2 sc in next st.* Repeat around. Total of 24 stitches. This concludes your fourth round.

TP-009

Step 3

Rounds 5-9 as follows: rnd 5: *1sc in next 3 sts, 2sc in next st.* Repeat from *. 30
rnd 6: *1sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st.* Repeat from *. 36
rnd 7: *1sc in next 5 sts, 2 sc in next st.* Repeat from *. 42
rnd 8: *1sc in next 6 sts, 2 sc in next st.* Repeat from *. 48
rnd 9: *1sc in next 7 sts, 2 sc in next st.* Repeat from *. 54 tie off

TP-010

Step 4

You'll need to make two of these circles; one for the top and one for the bottom of the TP toy.

TP-011

3. Crochet the Body

Step 1

Using white yarn for the body, chain 22 and work one single crochet in the 2nd chain from the hook.

TP-012

Step 2

Continue with one sc in each chain across for a total of 21 stitches. Chain one, and turn.

TP-013

Step 3

Rows 2-55: *1sc 2nd from hook. 1sc in each across for a total of 21 stitches. ch.1, turn*. Repeat from *. Tie off.

TP-014

4. Assemble the Toy

Step 1

While working on the body, pin the top circle to the top edge of the body piece to make sure your rectangle will go around the perimeter and then some. How far further your toilet paper roll goes is entirely up to you.

TP-015

Step 2

When your body piece is done, cut a length of white yarn and, using the yarn needle, whip stitch (or whatever your stitch of choice is) around the top edge of the body and edge of the circle.

TP-016

Step 3

When you come to the end of the circle, stitch along the body, vertically, so it's closed and there's a portion hanging off like a piece of toilet paper (see below). Don't stitch on the bottom circle just yet. You will need to add some more details.

5. Sew the Face

Step 1

For the character's cute little face, cut out basic shapes from felt. Cut out ovals for the eyes, a half circle for the mouth, a tiny heart for the tongue, little circles for the highlights in the eyes, tiny circles for the cheeks, and a large heart for the body of the toy.

TP-020

Step 2

Start with the eyes. Whip or straight stitch around the felt using the embroidery needle and thread, attaching it to the front-side of the crochet character. Alternatively, you could use tacky glue and glue the felt face to the body.

TP-021

Step 3

Sew the rest of the features as follows: mouth, cheeks, highlights, tongue. Keep all threads inside the body of the toy. Sew the heart to the corner of the hanging paper on the toy. Alternatively, you can fold in the corner, sew it to the "sheet" piece, and sew the heart on top.

6. Sew Perforated Lines

Step 1

Cut a length (you'll need several, so I suggest something around 24 inches for starters) of light blue embroidery thread. Double it up so the end is a loop.

TP-024

Step 2

Stitch long, straight stitches vertically onto the toilet paper roll to depict perforated lines. Once you reach the top, tie off, and repeat around the roll every three to four inches.

7. Stuff and Sew Closed

Step 1

Gab handfuls of polyfill and stuff the toy. Under-stuffing it results in a deflated lumpy look. Overstuffing it puffs out the top and bottom of the toy. For extra stability, you can place circles of cardboard in the top and bottom of the toy.

TP-027

Step 2

Once it's stuffed to your liking, sew the other circle onto the open hole (either top or bottom; whichever you didn't sew previously).

Admire Your Toilet Paper Toy

That's it - well done! Now you can hug that little stuffed TP roll and place it on your bed, shelf, or give it to a friend. Nothing say "I love you" like a weird stuffed toy.
