Craft for Kids: Make an Easy Cloud Mobile
Looking to add a touch of colour and whimsy to your child's bedroom? This easy to make and completely customizable cloud mobile is the perfect element to add to any room. Pick colours that complement your decor for a gorgeous colour co-ordinated look. This a great sewing project for kids and beginners.
- Assorted colours of felt (acrylic or wool)
- Fabric scissors
- Embroidery thread (or floss)
- Fabric glue
1. Cut Out the Components
Cut out two cloud shapes from white felt that are exactly the same. The size of the cloud can be customized to fit in with your decor.
Cut out several felt hearts in different colours. You will need two heart pieces for each finished heart on the mobile. Folding the felt and cutting two hearts at a time is an easy and quick way to get two identical hearts.
2. Assemble the Mobile
To assemble the mobile, start by cutting three long pieces of embroidery floss. These pieces are from where the hearts will hang. Place these pieces of floss on top of one of the cloud pieces.
Now position each heart pair on the embroidery floss, hanging down from the cloud, as pictured below. Keep the heart partner with it so they don't get mixed up.
Once you have all the hearts in place, use fabric glue to glue the heart pairs together, with the embroidery floss sandwiched in between each heart. Make sure you don't use too much glue and to place a little glue on the floss itself. Leave the glue to dry and ensure the hearts are secured together.
With all the hearts secured in place, it's time to glue the tops of the floss on to the bottom cloud. Place a few dots of glue on top of the floss as well.
Now place the top piece of cloud on top, aligning the shapes together. Allow the glue to dry before proceeding to the next step.
Thread your needle and place the tail of the floss in between the two cloud pieces.
Now carefully stitch around the outside of the cloud using a running stitch. Secure the thread at the end.
At the top of your cloud, secure a piece of floss that will be used to hang the mobile. Make sure you leave enough floss for hanging.
Finally, trim any excess floss on your mobile to give it a neat finish.
It's Raining Hearts
Well done, you've finished your mobile! Now it's time to hang it up and admire your hard work.
In this tutorial, you learned how to cut the pieces and assemble them to make your very own colorful heart-drop cloud mobile. This mobile design can be easily customized for your needs. Change the heart colours or even change the heart shapes to raindrops or stars. Your imagination is the limit.
Make sure when you hang your mobile it's out of the hands of babies and little fingers, as the heart pieces haven't been sewn in place and could present a choking hazard.
